Since they first started filming moving pictures in Hollywood in the early 20th Century, the Los Angeles enclave has been defining for the rest of the world what's hip and fashionable. Helping lead the urbancougar revolution is no exception. With the popularity of television programs like "Desperate Housewives," the enduring sex appeal of the likes of Julia Roberts, Kim Basinger, Diane Lane, and even pinup Pam Anderson, and the prominence of cougar/cub pairings like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Hollywood has finally embraced the long simmering, but oft overlooked, sexual power of the older woman.
But that certainly has not always been the case. For most of its history, Hollywood focused its attention on older men wooing impossibly hot, young women. Whether it was a fifty-plus Humphrey Bogart wooing a barely legal Lauren Bacall (in real life as well as in movies like "The Big Sleep" and "To Have and Have Not") or Cary Grant capturing Audrey Hepburn, Hollywood reflected the fantasy of the powerful men who ran the studios - mainly that with enough power, it doesn't matter how old you are, you can bag a hot ingenue looking for a leg up. And every young man knows what that's done to their sex lives. No self-respecting chick their age ever wanted anything to do with them, wanting instead the false image they saw on the screen, leaving the young man with nothing to do but go after even younger women and older unattached women more or less shit out of luck.
There were occasional exceptions to the rule in Hollywood, of course, the most notable being Mike Nichol's classic film The Graduate, which turned Anne Bancroft's seductive Mrs. Robinson into something of a cultural icon. Others like the hilarious, if slightly creepy, Harold & Maude, seemed like nothing more than outsider art. Even in the 70's, when it was anything goes on the sexual frontier, no one seemed to like "old" chicks, at least from Hollywood's perspective. But any kid who ever had a hot teacher in middle school knows that's just complete bullshit. Being ravaged by an older woman is every red-blooded heterosexual young man's wet dream, just as an old, bald, washed up man's fantasy is to boff some 19 year-old Playmate. But much to our dismay, it's those old, washed-up men who were running Hollywood all this time, and so that kind of coupling's pretty much all we ever saw on screen.
Fortunately, the tides are turning in Hollywood. It's still more common to see an ancient Michael Douglas playing opposite a stunning Catherine Zeta-Jones both on celluloid and in real life, but it is becoming more mainstream to witness the glamorization of the sexy older woman feasting on the younger man. Credit the success of scene-chewing characters like Heather Locklear's powercougar on Fox's Melrose Place and the one-woman sexual revolution Samantha (actress Kim Cattrall) of HBO's Sex and the City for finally proving to numbskull television and film execs that older women are hot, too.
And it's happening where it really matters, too - in real life. Everywhere you look (well, mainly on the covers of supermarket tabloids US Weekly, InTouch, and Stars) urbancougars are coming out of the jungle to eat relatively virgin meat. Obviously, there's the seemingly odd pairing of forty-something Demi Moore with Boy Toy Ashton Kutcher - who everyone figured was just an elaborate publicity stunt for Moore and the ultimate fantasy come true (or at least Punk'd episode) for Kutcher. As it turns out, that one's apparently got legs. As do romances between the likes of superstar cougar Cameron Diaz and her high-pitched honey Justin Timberlake, and, of course, urbancougar pioneer Susan Sarandon and her long-time husband Nuke LaLoosh.
It's all evidence that older women are finally commanding their sex appeal and, in the process, making every young male's ultimate sexual fantasy a daily reality. We can only hope this trend continues...
