Top Cougars of '08: Madonna

Madonna earns a spot on our list just for the sheer volume of tabloid headlines this year. Did she release an album? She's currently on a world tour, so it's certainly possible. How about another really awful movie? We must confess, in either case, we have no idea. But she was a constant fixture on our weekly Link Love posts and that's plenty enough for us.

The big Madonna news in 2008 was, of course, her highly-publicized split with husband, filmmaker and cub Guy Ritchie, and, to a lesser extent, her rumored dalliance with Yankees' slugger Alex Rodriguez. Most recently the tabs have gone gaga over her reported $76 million divorce settlement (this after Ritchie supposedly suggested he didn't want her stinkin' money). Madonna is nothing if not generous.

So what does all this mean for Madonna in the coming year? Only that she'll assuredly run through a herd of more-than-willing cubs, and then get engaged to a relatively famous young man she can mold, control and usher into the magical world of Kabbalah. And our money is on that not being A-Rod.

In any event, while the news of her divorce is sad, it's great to have Madonna back in her natural habitat and free to devour helpless prey at her leisure.


UPDATE: According to Forbes, Madonna and Ritchie's split ranks fourth in most expensive celebrity divorces.

UPDATE 2: Madonna and Ritchie released a statement saying reports of the $76 to $92 million divorce settlement were inaccurate. Which of course means they're totally true.
