Courteney Cox Comes to "Cougar Town"

According to Reuters and The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has ordered a new comedy called "Cougar Town," starring "Friends" alum Courteney Cox and produced by "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence. There is little detail on what the show will be about but if it's anything like "Scrubs" you can expect it to be relentlessly quirky, occasionally funny and pleasure-packed with spontaneous musical numbers.

(Hopefully it won't be as mercilessly painful as Cox's last starring vehicle, the unwatchable "Dirt" on FX.)

Lawrence tells the article's writer Nellie Andreeva, "Forty-year-old women on TV are so beautiful and perfect and wrinkle-free. People don't do the reality of it, and there is a real comedy area about a woman who is talking about Botox, about having sex with the lights on and how her body is changing." So is Lawrence suggesting that we'll see Cox bedding young men with the lights on? Cox has already confessed to doing a little botox.

We have mixed feelings about the prospects of "Cougar Town." While obviously we support any show that takes on the cougar lifestyle and more so one that promises to focus on the "reality of it" (albeit in the absurdist environment of a sitcom), we've never been big Courteney Cox fans and "Scrubs" has always seemed a little too precious for its own good. We aren't exactly optimistic about the combination of the two. We'd have preferred if this pilot were developed by the masterminds behind "Arrested Development" and starred someone like Raquel Welch. Now that's a show we'd watch.

But beggars can't be choosers, and any help in bringing the beauty and sophistication of the cougar lifestyle to the masses is certainly welcome.
