Joe the Plumber

Last night, during the third and final presidential debate, candidates Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama spent the better part of two hours speaking to or about some dude named Joe the Plumber.

Who is this mythical Joe the Plumber?

Supposedly it's a real person and not the star of a 1977 porno my friends and I "discovered" in one of our parents' closets. That particular Joe the Plumber didn't seem all that interested in taxes or healthcare. He was content doing his daily duty tending to the needs of a comely desperate housewife. She needed a little work done on her pipes and Joe the Plumber was happy to oblige.

Is it a bad omen when your two candidates for president, searching for a metaphor to connect with the common man, bring to mind 70s era porno?
